Winthrop Mixed Lodge # 2057

Winthrop Mixed Lodge # 2057 was called a "Mixed" Lodge because it included women along with members married to spouses of Italian descent. The new name was assigned in 1985 when members voted to change the original Winthrop Men's Lodge to Winthrop Mixed Lodge # 2057.

The Winthrop Men's Lodge #2057 was founded in March 1956. The institution was held on June 19, 1956.

John Guarino, then President of the East Boston Orient Heights Lodge # 1332, urged many men who had businesses in both East Boston and Winthrop to organize a Winthrop lodge. The chief organizer was grocer/baker Virgilio Buonopane, along with funeral director Ernest P. Caggiano Sr., and Supreme Lodge Trustee and then Chief Probation Officer of East Boston Court, Mario DeTroia.

Hector D'Amato presented the charter to Vincent Buonopane. Seventy-one members were initiated and installed. Officers included Venerable Robert DeGregorio, Assistant Venerable Ernest Caggiano Sr., Ex-Venerable Amadeo Buonopane, Orator Louis DiNucci, Financial Secretary Leo Silipigni, Treasurer Vincent Buonopane, Masters of Ceremonies Buster Inza and Matthew Fuimara, Trustees Harold Kelley, Joseph Capezza, Jerry Montone, Joseph Morane, and Alfred Scorzella, and Sergeant-at-Arms Domenic Chicola.

Winthrop Mixed Lodge # 2057 has seen members serve at both the State and National Levels. Philip R. Boncore Esq. was National OSIA President from August 1999 through August 2001. Boncore also served two terms as State President from 1993-95. Member Florence Kane served as the first female State President from 2007-2009.

Robert Boncore, Philip's father, was a National Sons of Italy Foundation Trustee. He also served as Trustee for the Massachusetts Grand Lodge Charitable and Educational Trust.

National Past President Philip Boncore served as President of the National Italian American Bar Association. Lodge member Robert DeLeo Esq. is the current Speaker of the House of Representatives. Joseph Ferrino is a member of the Winthrop Town Council. Ferdinand Martino received the Golden Lion Award in 2007. Robert A. Boncore Esq. is currently the State Orator.

Winthrop Mixed Lodge #2057 meets every fourth Tuesday of the month at 7:30p.m. at the Winthrop Lodge of Elks - 191 Washington St. - Winthrop, Ma.
